Dallas Food Couriers’ Tips for a Lighter Super Bowl

Cowboys fans. We know.

We know it’s tough to have such high hopes for your team, year after year, only to have those hopes shattered! Sometimes they’re shattered midway through the season, when playoff opportunities are blown before we even get to January. Sometimes, like this year, you get a tiny glimmer, an ember, of added hope, only to have it stomped on, repeatedly, by a 400 pound lineman or a kicker with the yips…

We’ve had a lot of time, Texans, to learn how to deal with loss. We. Are. Resilient! As we head into the Big Game next Sunday, we can lighten up a bit. Sure, our team isn’t in it to win it, but we can still have a great time. So, lighten up!

No, really, let’s lighten it up.

It turns out that many Americans will consume 2,400 calories in the four hours of the Big Game. Yikes! That’s a fumble to your New Years Resolutions if I’ve ever heard of one! So let’s lighten up this coming Super Bowl Sunday. (No, nobody said “sundae”.)

Here are our Dallas food couriers’ 6 heart healthy swaps to make as you head into the Big Game on Sunday:

Get out your air fryer!- If you don’t have one, what are you waiting for? Make your favorite guilty pleasures into crunchy goodness without the added frying oil. From tenders to potato skins, the air fryer is one way to have your cake and eat it too. (Not literally, of course. We just said we were making HEALTHY swaps.)

Popcorn instead of chips- Air popped popcorn, even with some added butter and salt, is infinitely better for you than the microwave kind. But, more than that, popcorn is a great swap for potato chips. As a whole grain with nearly no fat, popcorn is a crunchy alternative to greasy, calorie laden potato chips. Plus, it’s just as poppable.

Fizzy water for alcohol- Football and beer tend to go hand-in-hand, but at about 150 calories per beverage, it’s best to find an alternative. Forget the alcohol and go for fizzy water with fruit or flavored water. Another plus? You would wake up with a broken heart, a bloated belly, and a hangover.

Yogurt in place of sour cream- Don’t want to give up your favorite dips? Try swapping yogurt for any dip calling for sour cream. You’ll get a protein boost with half the fat. Even better, add some fresh veggies to the plate to use with your dip instead of bread, chips, or crackers.

Have a hearty *healthy* breakfast- Swap your traditional “no breakfast but coffee” breakfast with a hearty meal high in protein and whole grains. Think: oatmeal with nuts, spinach mixed into scrambled eggs, or protein pancakes. Having a full belly before the game starts will reduce the mindless munching.

Grab a small plate- Sometimes snacking is all about the eyes and not the stomach. As you head to the snack table, swap your giant plate for a small one. Fill it up. Maybe even go back twice! But seeing the full plate can help your brain tell your body that you don’t really need any more food.

While we can’t swap the Eagles for the Cowboys, we all can make these 6 heart healthy swaps as we head into Super Bowl Sunday celebrations.
